Veteran Services

About one out of six older adults in the Unites States served in the armed forces. On this page, we list some of the local, state, and federal agencies and programs working to ensure that US veterans are able to age with dignity and independence. Some of the programs provide services or benefits to veterans while others assist family caregivers or dependents.

If a veteran is having suicidal thoughts or a mental health crisis, they or someone they know can call 988 and then press 1 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line. A trained responder will listen and provide support and resources. Calling the crisis line is free and confidential.

This state agency helps veterans and their families with education, employment, health care, home loans, housing, and accessing other benefits and services. In addition to providing resources and information on its website, CalVet benefits specialists can provide counseling and referral services.

Congressmember Bera provides information and resources for veterans on his official website. Veterans can contact Representative Bera's office for assistance with veterans' issues.

The Sacramento Public Library system provides information about veterans benefits and resources through its website and special events. Trained resource specialists can help veterans and family members navigate and access benefits and other assistance.

The VA is the main federal government agency that provides a full range of services and benefits to veterans, including healthcare, career and employment support, housing assistance, and disability services.

General Caregiver Support includes resources, education, and support for caregivers of veterans. Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers provides resources, education, support, financial stipends, and health insurance to eligible veterans. The VA also offers a Caregiver Support Line to help caregivers find information and services.

Caregivers for veterans can connect with a local support coordinator for help accessing VA and other services and benefits. The VA also offers caregiver education and support groups.

The Women Veterans Program provides gender-specific medical, therapeutic, supportive, and social services to all eligible and enrolled women veterans. The Woman Veterans Call Center is also available to assist with eligibility and enrollment questions or other concerns at (855) 829-6636.

This program uses golf as a therapy tool for disabled veterans. The group is working to develop a community center and golf training facility.
